Ascension Day

Every year on 11th January, the Sultanate of Oman commemorates a significant moment in its recent history: Ascension Day, marking the day when Sultan Haitham bin Tariq ascended to the throne (this year marks the 4th anniversary). This day symbolises not just a change in leadership but also embodies the spirit of continuity and the promise of a renewed vision for the future of Oman.

Historical Context of Ascension Day

Ascension Day in Oman has a profound historical context. It marks the beginning of a new era following the passing of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who transformed Oman into a modern state. The ascension of Sultan Haitham signifies the continuation of this legacy, bringing with it hopes of progress and stability.

Prior to becoming Sultan, Haitham had been a long-serving member of the cabinet of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, his cousin. He was Minister of Heritage and Culture from 2002 to 2020.

After the death of Sultan Qaboos, Haitham was named by the royal family and Qaboos’s will as Sultan of Oman the next day and took an oath before an emergency session of the Council of Oman in Al-Bustan.
