Beyond the Blazing Heat: 4 Refreshing Summer Escapes in the Gulf

As the summer temperatures start spiking across the Gulf, the idea of spending a few months in the sweltering desert may seem unbearable. But before you write off the entire region as an indoor-only destination until autumn, there are some delightfully cool, lush gems waiting to be discovered. From breezy beach oases to wild mountain retreats, the Gulf is home to plenty of refreshing summer refuges.

As someone who has travelled extensively across the Middle East since 2005, I always make sure to experience these hidden gems firsthand. A bit of inside local knowledge allows me to find this treasures so you can make the most of the hot summer by exploring places that are diverse, interesting and most of all not blazing hot. Read on for four of my top picks for an unforgettable summer in the Gulf.

The Red Sea Riviera: Saudi Arabia

Saudi’s Red Sea Coast is establishing itself as a prime beach getaway, with stretches of blazing coral reefs, turquoise waters, and some serious luxury development in the works. While the tourism push is still in its early stages there (and this is what makes it so enticing and earned them the title: The new Maldives), places like Jeddah already offer a true taste of charming coastal life.

Beyond the city’s historic Al-Balad district and bustling corniche lies a dreamy beach scene with swaying palms, snorkeling sites, and elegant private pool resorts. It’s the perfect combo of rich cultural allure and relaxing seaside vibes – plus, Jeddah stays breezy enough for outdoor pursuits all summer long. (you can find a guide for Jeddah here). The sea itself offers amazing diving, with Red Sea temperatures hitting the 80s (F) – 26 degrees.

For ultimate tranquility, you can’t beat the remote Red Sea Project site near the border with Jordan. This ambitious tourism development still has a ways to go but 2 hotels have already opened: St Regis and Six Senses. Book one now for an ultra-exclusive retreat amid pristine coral reefs and mangrove forests.

Lush Highland Escapes: Al Baha & Taif, Saudi Arabia

While most associate Saudi with desert dunes, the Sarawat Mountains in the southwest offer a completely different scene. With fertile valleys, lush meadows, and terraced farms rising over 2,000 meters above sea level, the region provides an idyllic summer refuge.

The province of Al Baha is an absolute delight in the warmer months. Ancient villages cling to sheer cliffs while rivers and waterfalls rush through wild rose and juniper-filled landscapes. The year-round mild temperatures and wealth of outdoor adventures available (hiking, mountain biking, abseiling, and more) make an Al Baha summer hard to beat.

Similarly enchanting is the city of Taif, about an hour from Mecca. Tradition has it that wealthy city dwellers would migrate to Taif every summer to escape the scorching low-lying heat plus it has been a must go summer destination for many Saudi Kings. These days, it still offers a popular retreat in its cooler climes surrounded by gardens, farms, and opportunities for outdoor adventures in the Al-Shubayti valley region.

July and August are peak season for both Al Baha and Taif, so don’t wait to book your highland accommodations!

The Khareef (Monsoon) Cloud Forests: Salalah, Oman

While much of the Gulf bakes under relentless summer sunshine, the southern region of Dhofar in Oman is enveloped in a verdant cloud forest from June through September. Cooler, moisture-rich monsoon winds from the Indian Ocean blanket the mountain slopes in a lush, fragrant fog – a magical experience for visitors.

The provincial capital of Salalah transforms into a refreshing lush oasis during this Khareef season. Temperatures pleasantly hover in the 80s (F) – around 26 degrees Celcius – a welcome respite from the rest of the region. Wander the dense green hillsides bursting with wildflowers and cascading waterfalls, stroll the stunning natural “tween waters” beach, or explore the region’s archaeological sites.

Don’t miss the day trips outside of the city to explore the misty monsoon forests of Qara, Jebel Samhan, and nearby Mughsail beach. Between the cooling rains and amazing biodiversity on display, the Khareef is a one-of-a-kind experience.

While it’s far less crowded than the UAE summer hotspots, Khareef season is still peak travel periods for Salalah, so book hotels and tours well in advance.

Cultural Immersion Like No Other

Between highland escapes, cloud forests, and seaside idylls, the Gulf offers no shortage of unforgettable summer destinations. With such incredible diversity in landscapes and cultures across the region, every visit promises a new adventure.
